The students of the University of Turbat (UoT) are facing serious and unfair restrictions imposed by the administration. These include ceasing students from organizing literary book stalls, closing the boys’ hostel gate at 7pm even for enrolled students, and preventing female members of Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC) from exiting the university despite having valid passes. Students are also being harassed without any reason, and members of BSAC are being unfairly summoned before a ‘Disciplinary Committee’, where they face further mistreatment. In addition, the administration has canceled the hostel allotments of some students and punished those who simply raised questions about these unfair restrictions.
Apart from these issues, students are also struggling with a lack of essential academic resources. The laboratories of the Natural and Basic Sciences and Chemistry departments do not have the necessary equipment, chemicals, and machinery required for practical learning.
In response to these ongoing problems, BSAC, with the full support of students, organized a peaceful walk and submitted a formal draft of their concerns to the university administration. Students also staged a peaceful protest and a sit-in outside the Admin Block, giving the administration 24 hours to respond to their demands. However, despite this peaceful protest, no representative from the university came forward to discuss or address the concerns raised by students.
The next day, instead of engaging in dialogue, the University of Turbat released a statement on its social media pages making false allegations against the protesting students. The administration also announced the cancellation of admissions of 1 students and suspension of 5 student for one semester each accusing them of bringing unauthorized individuals and intoxicating substances into the hostel premises – claims that are completely false and have no evidence. Such actions only serve to silence students and damage the university’s own reputation.
We strongly condemn these unfair decisions and demand the immediate reinstatement of all expelled students and the restoration of their hostel allotments. Furthermore, we urge the university administration to listen to the genuine concerns of students and take necessary steps to resolve these issues in a fair and responsible manner.
