“Investments on agriculture are the best weapons to eradicate poverty and hunger in a country because agriculture has made billions of lives perfect. This is what we are suffering from the crisis of agriculture because our authorities do not invest more on agriculture.” says the CEO of Microsoft Company, America.
Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan and covers an area of 347,190 square kilometers. The province exists multiple grievances one of which is ignoring the agriculture sector.
There are manifold causes of degrading agriculture_ specifically in Balochistan. Water scarcity is one such issues which is troubling the farmers to maintain the high level of agriculture.
Scarcity of water has become a major problem. Every year, due to scarcity of water, a lot of crops and fields get destroyed. It gets birth with less degree of rains. However, in the current season, there have been a lot of rains in the province. Sadly, Balochistan receives a short amount of funds. Approximately, 81 per cent of the farmers in Balochistan complain of no proper facilities to availing water.
All our government needs to do is to creating resources by providing machines to the farmers so that they can easily approach to the underground water.
One other issue is government does not provide the farmers with quality seeds to cultivate. Resultantly, rural farmers, largely thanks to lack of awareness, use old and uncertified seeds for growing crops resulting in approximately 40pc germination failure. This inflicts massive losses on both individual farmers and also the provincial economy.
Thus, farmers are unable to invest in agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and use of tractors for their fields.
The farmers are an annoying segment of society because they are always stuck in the epidemic of problems. The introductory plethora of problems and impediments are halting progress of the agriculture sector. There is a dire need of building small and big dams in order to store water.
Hence, Balochistan covers a huge and large amount of land in Pakistan but still most of the land remains uncultivated. This is just because an abnormal change in weather also further worsened the situation. In the southern areas of Balochistan like Jaffarabad, Naseerabad and Sibi, there is unforeseen rain when the crops are ready for harvest.
Because most of the uneducated sector of Balochistan are uneducated, they find agriculture a useful source of income. But if agriculture is ignored, it creates difficulties and hurdles for them to run and end up with getting involved in social crimes.
Government of Balochistan needs to think of it and bring forward remedies to help the growth of agriculture in the province. If in the times of need government does not stand with its people, they are never going to rely on them back.
